    In The Courage to Teach, Palmer opens by telling the reader that the entire book will be based on the assertion that good teaching is not based on the teacher’s technique, but rather that it comes from the identity and integrity of the teacher. Good teachers, through understanding and being aware of their own selfhood--their identities and integrities--are able to connect with their students, and in turn, connect them to the subject being taught. Good teachers do not rely on methods and techniques. Rather, they make themselves available and vulnerable to “the service of learning.” Bad teachers, on the other hand, distance themselves from the subject they are teaching, and by doing this they distance themselves from their students. The first part of the book deals mostly with the idea that a teacher must have a strong sense of self before he can impart his knowledge on students. The teacher must recognize that the people are called to teach by their encounters with mentors. One must be careful not to idealize their mentor so much that they try to teach in the same way, for this usually goes against one’s own integrity. Other people are called to teach by encountering a particular subject matter that appeals to their integrity..........
    Chapter 2 deals primarily with the different aspects of fear as it relates to students and teaching. Many classrooms are so riddled with fear--fear of embarrassment, fear of bad grades, etc--that students who were born with the love of learning grow to hate the idea of school. Diversity in classrooms sometimes leads to a fear of conflicts that will ensue when divergent truths meet. Other fears can help us survive, or even learn and grow. For example, a teacher’s fear that he is teaching poorly is evidence that he cares about teaching, not a sign of his failure. Palmer talks about a particular “Student From Hell” that he encountered later on in his career and how the student influenced him. The Student From Hell incited great fear in Palmer, a fear that he was not a good enough teacher to be able to inspire this student. However, after talking to the student, he realized the student actually had deep fears of his own, which showed Palmer that although silence, withdrawal, and cynicism are often signs of ignorance, it is equally possible that they are a result of fear. Good teaching, Palmer concludes, is an act of hospitality toward young people, and hospitality in general always benefits the host more than the guest.

    Justice- means the quality of being just or fair. Neil would define justice as the idea that people should not be oblivious to the concept that children are individuals that too deserve to be treated fairly. Children are not subordinate to adults.
    Punishment- the practice of imposing something unpleasant or aversive on a person or animal in response to an unwanted or disobedient behavior. This idea is an abstract concept which would not be well accepted in its common manner within the school of Summerhill.

    Unconscious- is the state of not conscious; without awareness, sensation, or cognition. In Summerhill (chpt.4) unconscious is also the unknown "the unconscious has shown that most of our actions have a hidden source...we act but we do no know why we act." The drive to act in the unconscious is a lot strong that the conscious because they are so different. Being unconsciously aware does not mean a child is bad it all goes back to their "influences" as a child that make them the way they are today.
    Repressed- To hold back by an act of volition. In Summerhill (chpt.6) act of repressed is the way the children hide their feelings. "repressed feelings are not dead; they are only sleeping." The children react their feelings through "hate" which is "fear" because they never got the chance to understand the significance with shared feelings with their parents.

    John Taylor Gatto has been a New York City schoolteacher for over twenty six years and was named New York State Teacher of the Year in 1991. His book is comprised of essays, speeches and commentaries that critique the national curriculum of schooling, stating that it prevents children from learning how to think and act and ultimately dumbs them down. Throughout the book, Gatto challenges the curriculum of compulsory schooling and presents his ideas for its transformation.

    Chapter 2 is a speech called "The Psychopathic School" which is our current school system according to Gatto. He outlines many things wrong with the system and why it isn’t working and the changes that have to be implemented if we are ever to fix the problem. He writes about the breakdown of society. It is no longer community based but “network” based. The exclusion of children and the elderly have led us to a society of present dwellers, with no past and no future. Children are no longer allowed to think for themselves and are now dependent on outside sources of entertainment and structure to make sense of their lives. This dependency has led us on a slippery slope of “narcotic drugs, brainless competition, recreational sex, the pornography of violence, gambling, and alcohol… lives devoted to buying things”. Children becoming grown ups are usurped because of the time spent away from actual real world knowledge. School is also seen as antithetical to child-parent relationships. To correct the problem schooling has to be taken out of the classroom and put back into the communities. Children have to be self reliant and given the opportunity to trust themselves to further their own self knowledge and independence; which is the key to “success”. Families have to be given space within the system that builds family unity. It is also time to hush the voices of the so-called “expert” who has advanced centralization.
    Chapter 3 is an essay awarded first prize, Geraldine Dodge Foundation. In this essay Gatto explains why he became a teacher and what sustain him during his teaching career. The Green Monongahela about 40 miles south of Pittsburg was where Gatto grew. Gatto, became a teacher because the job he had, which was making 30 second commercials for a production company served no purpose. He grew doll of his party lifestyle and decided to quit one day and pursue teaching junior high school in New York City. He quickly figured out that teaching the dummies and bad kids of New York City was no easy task. After three months the dismal working conditions, the ugly rooms, the torn books, the repeated instances of petty complaints from authorities, the bell, the buzzers, the drab teacher food in the cafeterias. It was one girl name Milagros who changed him because she wanted to learn. “A teacher like you cannot be found” that simple sentence made me a teacher for life. Gatto helped Milagros get to her right level class, and she later became an award winning teacher for Norman Thomas High School in New York City. Gatto journey to teach was a crazy one but he made the best out of it and helped as many kids as he could.

    As discussed in class, we have already learned about the poor learning conditions for the students and teachers. But, the NEA was a significant player in changing rural school systems to more closely resemble urban schools in education at the turn of the 20th century. In the 1890’s the National Education Association played a major role to changing the rural school systems. They stated that children should be taught by professionally trained teachers, that schools should not be political, and that there should be a correlation between the community and the curriculum. According to Tyack, children would learn sound values and vocational skills. The teachers were obligated to follow the State Course of Study, have an organized curriculum which was to be approved by the county’s superintendent, as well as many other things.
    This change of schooling had a big impact on the community. Many community members, or people who were involved with schools on a local, communal level, were concerned that turning over schools to educational professionals could cause a loss in social identity. According to the text, people felt very strongly towards their ideas and there was a big opposition between controversial sides, while the new schools were opening up opportunities for the students in the modern society; it was also causing the diversity of lifestyles to deteriorate.

    Bloom's idea of education being planned is frowned upon because it does not let students spark their own creativity and values to learn. Instead these students must conform to certain guides of education and lose their own sense of seeking the knowledge they want to learn. Through his examination of students at the time the book was written, he found that many students were forced into molds that hindered their creativity and desire to learn.
    Bloom notes that "to be sure of yourself is to be ignorant", and it means that you are closed minded and you must have a democratic/open mind to everything. He notes that the ideal goal of the higher education system is to raise Democrats to fit the government.

    Perhaps the greatest observation of Bloom is the evolution of reasons for attending educational institutions. He noted in Lincoln's time that students went to seek knowledge, rather than students do today to guarantee a successful career. He also criticizes schools because everything learned in classes today is memorized for a standardized test and then forgotten to make room for the next course's requirements. Instead of students pursuing the knowledge they desire, the knowledge is planned out for them with little say in what the student actually wants to learn.
    For Bloom, true education comes from contemplating the questions the great philosophers asked, "Who am I?" and "What is Man?"

Loewen addresses grievances, misrepresentations and absence present in the high school text {} and curriculum of the American educational system. It is fairly uncommon for students to disregard, disagree or entirely disregard the profusely of information presented to them during their formative years.     Chapter 1: Chapter one is all about the set up. There are two types of people, the oppressed and the oppressors. Or the rulers and the ones they rule over. There is a key understanding of the significant roles each party pla earn. Without the oppressed, the oppressors have nothing to rule over. Like on page 44, they have to earn freedom by conquest, it’s not a right to be born into like it is for people of our time. Try and imagine a society where everything was run for you and you had no choice in your life. How do you over come that, by taking over? They have to educated, and unite each other so as a whole they can overcome and pursue the right to be human and have freedom.
